When is it Time to Update?

Trends and decorating fads come and go so quickly. Remember when sponge painting the walls was all the rage? Chevron stripes on every surface? It all changes so fast that you might not even notice when your house starts to look a little dated.

Tattered, Worn Furniture

Take a good look at your furniture and decide if it’s time for an update. If you find yourself wondering “Do I have decent furniture stores near me?” then this might be an indicator.

  • Does your couch have pops of color that aren’t part of the original pattern? Is it impossible to make your loveseat look even a little bit clean? Furniture that looks perpetually dirty is unwelcoming and unattractive. Replacements like leather are easier to keep clean and age well.
  • You might love the armchair that you brought from your dorm room, but you can only patch the fabric so many times before it starts to resemble a quilt. If your furniture’s upholstery is starting to look faded and frayed, it’s time to replace it.

Outdated Wall Trends

There are some color schemes that belong in the past. Colors that have fallen out of style instantly make a home look dated, so brighten up your space by avoiding these unfortunate trends:

  • Wallpaper and wallpaper borders. Loud floral wallpaper patterns hearken back to the 80s, and the 90s loved wallpaper borders. Remove wallpaper and put a fresh clean color on the walls instead.
  • Dusty pastels. Any color prefaced with the word “dusty” gives you an instant visual. One reason these 80s favorites aren’t trendy anymore? They never look clean!
  • Dark wood. Dark wood paneling makes a house feel bleak and cavernous. There’s a place for dark wood, but wall covering is not one of them.

Changes don’t have to happen all at once, but there’s something satisfying about updating a space in your home. Freshening up an area feels clean and invigorating, and brings your home up to date.
